Influenza Spreads Early: Infection Status Begins to Be Tracked Through Sewage (October 10, 2026)
A Japanese news report says influenza has entered its epidemic season early. A University of Tokyo research group estimates the number of infections from viral RNA concentrations in sewage, aiming to track rises and falls in patient numbers in near real time. Current estimates rely on clinic patient counts from the previous week, while sewage analysis may reveal trends sooner. Sapporo City publishes its sewage data, which indicates a rapid expansion of the epidemic; the report cites a roughly 3.3-fold rise in viral concentration between the 27th of last month and the 4th of this month, and an estimated scale of just under 50 patients per medical institution based on past data. Project lead Professor Masaaki Kitajima says he hopes sewage surveillance can also be used at the national level.
