What AI Can’t Replace: The Rope Team You Can’t Download | Rainer Petek | TEDxGöttingen
Trust, courage and human connection are described as qualities that cannot be downloaded, even as AI takes on more information processing and idea generation. Speaker Rainer Petek, a former extreme mountaineer and mountain guide who now works as a leadership expert, draws on his climbing and guiding experience to examine what makes a team resilient when the stakes are high. He argues that the people one can rely on may be the most important asset.

AI can process information, generate ideas and solve increasingly complex problems. But there are things you cannot download, including trust, courage and the human connection that holds a team together when the stakes are high. Drawing on his experience as an extreme mountaineer, mountain guide and leadership expert, Rainer Petek explores what makes a team truly resilient and why the most important superpower may be the people we can rely on when the stakes are high. TEDxGöttingen 2026 was initiated, organized and moderated by Patrick Bartl. The event brought together ten speakers from science, business and society to explore the theme “Unleashing Superpowers – Ideas that Transform Systems.” Rainer Petek, Certified Speaking Professional and Global Speaking Fellows, is the author of ten books, trusted advisor, global keynote speaker and former extreme mountaineer. As a 19-year-old, he climbed the north face of the Grandes Jorasses, one of the most difficult walls in the Alps. As a professional mountain guide, he led clients through extreme routes in the Alps and up 6,000-meter peaks in the Himalayas. For more than 25 years, he has been working with international companies and managers from Germany to Silicon Valley about leadership and change and has given keynotes worldwide. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
