Ask these three questions about new tourist developments | Kimberly Clarke | TEDxLogan Circle
Cities across the world are spending billions to attract visitors through stadiums, resorts, convention centers and entertainment districts, including projects in the Washington, D.C. region. Similar strategies do not always produce the same results: some destinations gain jobs and local business growth, while others face crowded infrastructure, rising housing costs and pressure on natural and cultural resources. This TEDxLogan Circle talk by Dr. Kimberly Clarke, a public policy professional and researcher, examines why tourism benefits some places and strains others. She sets out key questions to ask about new tourism development so that destinations are strengthened rather than strained.

Cities around the world are investing billions of dollars to attract tourists by building stadiums, resorts, convention centers, and entertainment districts, including many projects emerging across the Washington, D.C. region. Yet, places that pursue the same strategy often see very different results. Some destinations experience strong economic growth, new jobs, and vibrant local businesses, while others struggle with overcrowded infrastructure, rising housing costs, and pressure on natural and cultural resources. How can the same strategy lead to such different outcomes? Kimberly’s research explores why tourism benefits some destinations while straining others. In her talk, she reveals the key questions to ask about new development to ensure we strengthen destinations rather than strain them. Dr. Kimberly Clarke is a public policy professional, researcher, and speaker based in the Washington, D.C. area. She holds a PhD from Southern New Hampshire University, holds degrees from Johnson & Wales University, and earned an MBA from Bowie State University. Her research explores how tourism policy can harmonize economic growth with environmental sustainability. Her work bridges academic research with practical strategies that help communities thrive while creating lasting benefits for residents and visitors alike. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
