The secret to a longer sporting career is recovery | Navnita Gautam | TEDxSukhna Lake
Athletic therapist Navnita Gautam argues that recovery, rather than simply training harder, can help elite athletes extend their sporting careers. Drawing on her work across international cricket and golf, she describes how individual routines, early competition preparation, trust and purpose shape recovery outcomes. She also contrasts what data shows with what relationships reveal, suggesting technology is most useful when it helps staff understand athletes better.
In this video- Recovery as a route to longer sporting careers
- Individual athlete routines and early competition preparation
- Data describes what happened; relationships explain why
- Technology used to understand athletes better, not to replace human connection
What if the secret to a longer sporting career isn't working harder, but recovering smarter? In this insightful talk, Navnita Gautam explores how recovery can help elite athletes sustain performance and extend their careers. Drawing from her experience working across international cricket and golf, she reveals why recovery is about much more than machines, data and technology. From understanding an athlete’s individual routines and preparing for competition well in advance to building trust and maintaining purpose, she explains how seemingly small decisions can make a lasting difference. She also highlights an important distinction: data tells us what happened, but relationships help us understand why. The future of sports medicine lies not in replacing human connection with technology, but in using technology to understand athletes better. Because recovery isn't just about adding years to a career. It's about adding life to every year of that career. Navnita (Nav) Gautam is a Canadian Certified Athletic Therapist and the 1st Certified Female Athletic Therapist in India, working across elite professional sport, including LIV Golf, the DP World Tour, the Indian Premier League (IPL), particularly RCB, and the Women's Premier League (WPL). Her expertise spans athlete recovery, injury risk reduction, performance rehabilitation, manual therapy, load monitoring, and return-to-performance planning. She has worked with athletes in some of the world's most demanding competitive environments, helping them optimize recovery, resilience, and long-term performance. Through her work, Nav explores how advances in recovery science, technology, and nervous system regulation are reshaping human performance. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
