Barbara Serra reflects on two decades of change in journalism, from the 2006 launch of Al Jazeera English to the same year's opening of Facebook to everyone. The talk looks at how algorithms are replacing the traditional news rundown and how viewers have become followers. It asks whether people are really better informed today. Serra, a journalist, documentary maker and writer who has worked for BBC, Al Jazeera English and Sky News UK, presents these ideas at TEDx Sassari.

Negli ultimi vent’anni Barbara Serra ha vissuto dall’interno una doppia rivoluzione del giornalismo. Nel 2006 è tra i giornalisti che lanciano Al Jazeera English, il canale che segna la fine del monopolio occidentale sull’informazione globale. Lo stesso anno Facebook si apre a tutti, dando il via all’era digitale dell’informazione. Se il motto di Al Jazeera era “la voce di chi non ha voce”, i social hanno dato voce a tutti. L’algoritmo sta sostituendo la scaletta del TG e i telespettatori sono diventati followers. Vent’anni dopo, Barbara Serra porta sul palco di TEDx Sassari una domanda fondamentale: siamo davvero meglio informati? Chi fa luce sul mondo? Giornalista, documentarista e scrittrice, Barbara Serra ha lavorato tra BBC, Al Jazeera English e Sky News UK, raccontando il mondo dall’Europa, dal Medio Oriente e da Washington. È stata la prima giornalista non madrelingua inglese a condurre un telegiornale in prima serata sulla televisione britannica. Nel 2020 realizza Fascism in the Family, sulla storia di suo nonno, podestà di Carbonia: premiato ai New York Festivals TV & Film Awards, diventa nel 2025 il libro Fascismo in famiglia (Garzanti).
