Chinese academic: China is preparing to defeat US forces in Taiwan

Steve Tsang, director of the China Institute at SOAS University of London, speaks to Al Jazeera about China's continued efforts to strengthen its military capabilities. He says these are meant to deter the United States or inflict heavy losses on its forces should it intervene to prevent control of Taiwan. Tsang argues that the key question is how far China can be deterred, not whether Washington can build a deterrent force. He also says that Chinese military leaders under Xi Jinping appear unwilling to advise based on American deterrence, fearing removal from their posts.
