The Mind's Illusion or the Heart's Truth? | Murad Asiltürk | TEDxNecmettin Erbakan University
Neuroscience can map trillions of neural connections, yet it struggles to capture the subjective experience of consciousness and feeling. The talk explores thought, consciousness, knowing and feeling through modern neuroscience, the filter/modem brain hypothesis of William James and Henri Bergson, and the philosophy of Al-Ghazali. The speaker argues that the brain analyzes and generates options while the heart guides orientation, values and choices. Knowledge, he suggests, should lead to humility and moral wisdom rather than pride.

While neuroscience can map trillions of neural connections and explain how information is processed, it falls short of capturing the subjective experience of consciousness and feeling. In this talk, the concepts of thought, consciousness, knowing, and feeling are explored through the lens of modern neuroscience, the 'filter/modem' brain hypothesis of William James and Henri Bergson, and the philosophical framework of Al-Ghazali. While the brain analyzes and generates options, the heart guides our orientation, values, and choices. The speaker highlights the crucial balance between mind and heart, where knowledge transforms not into pride, but into humility and moral wisdom Associate Professor Murad Asiltürk, MD, graduated from Ankara Anatolian High School.
