Consumption tax cut bill passes lower house as four LDP members abstain

A bill to cut the consumption tax rate on food to 1% passed the House of Representatives plenary session with support from the ruling bloc and others. Opposition parties objected, saying the funding source had not been made clear. Four LDP members, including former prime minister Ishiba and former economy minister Obuchi, abstained from the vote. The bill is scheduled to be debated in the House of Councillors, where the ruling party is a minority, from next week.
