Labor and management both call for stronger safeguards on discretionary work system
A Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare subcommittee discussed the future of the discretionary work system as part of planned revisions to the Labor Standards Act. The government and business groups have called for expanding the occupations covered by the system. Worker representatives warned that the system tends to lead to long working hours and urged stronger health protection measures, while employer representatives also argued that legal measures against misuse should be considered. The ministry plans to continue discussions based partly on a survey conducted in the summer.
