Former Chief of Staff Eisenkot to be tasked with forming government; coalition talks face deadline

Israeli President Herzog has signaled his intention to task Gadi Eisenkot, opposition leader and former army chief of staff, with forming a government following the October general election. Eisenkot, who leads the centrist Yashar party, was recommended by 67 people in the president's consultations, more than the 46 backing Prime Minister Netanyahu of the Likud party. After the formal assignment, coalition talks must be completed within 42 days, including an extension period.
