Hundreds of thousands on French streets despite communication restrictions

The messaging app Bitchat, created by Jack Dorsey, topped the social networking category in France's app store and entered the top ten free apps across all categories. The surge in downloads followed large-scale protests on Saturday against the cost of living, which saw looting and mass arrests. The report also covers calls by former prime minister Gabriel Attal for a temporary, targeted social media ban, and an outage of Orange's mobile network lasting about ten hours on Wednesday.
