Her free birth went viral. Let's talk about it.
A Nebraska farmer and influencer, Abbey Khopesh, drew wide attention before the birth of her second child after promoting free births, home births, unassisted birth and skipping prenatal care, and going past her expected due date. This video from Mama Doctor Jones looks at whether home births are safer than hospital births, why unassisted birth can carry serious risks, and how modern free birth differs from traditional birthing practices. The presenter states support for bodily autonomy while arguing that misinformation about the safety of these choices should be challenged. They point out that a simple ultrasound can reveal conditions such as a low-lying placenta, which can affect whether a delivery goes safely.

Recently, a Nebraska farmer and newly-minted influencer Abbey Khopesh went majorly viral in the lead-up to the birth of her second child. Why? Because she spent the last trimester spreading the good word of free births, home births, birthing without any medical assistance, and avoiding all prenatal care during pregnancy, all while going well past her expected due date based on her "date of conception." I firmly believe that every woman and AFAB person who gets pregnant and gives birth has the right to total bodily autonomy. However, I still want to push back against people who spread this kind of misinformation about the safety of free births, home births, and avoiding prenatal care. Even just knowing whether you have a low-lying placenta via a simple ultrasound can mean the difference between a safe, healthy delivery and a catastrophe. Most of the time, birth works out fine - even when you, like Abbey, avoid all medical care. But that doesn't matter when you're the person for whom it doesn't go well. So, with that in mind, today we're covering: 🏥 Whether home births are actually safer than hospital births 🤰🏽 What makes this sort of birth so dangerous 🙅🏼♀️ Why modern free birth is not similar to how women 'have always done it' Did you watch her TikToks leading up to her (fortunately successful) second free birth?
