Gasoline subsidy cut under review, with 3 or 5 yen monthly price increase proposed
The Japanese government is considering gradually reducing its subsidy that keeps gasoline prices down amid rising costs linked to the situation in the Middle East. According to officials, the subsidy could be cut as early as December, with prices rising by about 3 or 5 yen per month. Prime Minister Takaichi said the government would review the subsidy level and how the program will end, citing concerns about public finances. Subsidies for electricity and gas bills are also being considered for restart between January and March.
