Ships appear on land in the Gulf: how satellite signals can disrupt navigation

British reports identified more than 15,000 abnormal ship positions in the Gulf and around the Strait of Hormuz during the last week of October. The coverage explains how GPS works and the difference between jamming and electronic spoofing, and how fake radio signals can place ships far from their real locations. It also looks at the effects on sea and air navigation and British warnings against relying on satellite positioning alone.
