Japan's Disaster Control Tower, the Disaster Prevention Agency, Launches Today Ahead of Major Disasters

Japan's new Disaster Prevention Agency was launched on November 2 to prepare for disasters on a national scale. Until now, national disaster prevention was handled by the Cabinet Office's disaster management staff and various ministries. The agency aims to act as a control tower from the immediate aftermath of a disaster through recovery and reconstruction, while promoting thorough advance prevention. It will also support local governments in improving their disaster plans, with the Nankai Trough earthquake cited as a scenario.

国難級の災害に備え、事前防災のさらなる推進と災害時には司令塔を担う「防災庁」が2日に発足しました。 　これまで国の防災は内閣府の防災担当や各省庁が担っていましたが、新たに発足した防災庁は災害の発生直後から復旧・復興までの対応を司令塔として進めることを目指すほか、徹底した「事前防災」を掲げています。 　南海トラフ地震などの国難級の災害を想定し、自治体の防災計画を改善するための支援や、地域の防災力向上に取り組みます。 東京大学大学院情報学環　関谷直也教授 「避難とか色々な対策にしても、方針が結構統一感がないところが今の日本の防災の課題かなというふうに思います。国として責任を持って防災対策をどのように進めていくか、その自治体をどれだけサポートしていけるか、こういったことが防災庁のポイントになってくるというふうに思います」 　また、防災庁の大臣になる細野氏は、大規模災害に備えて国民に対し1週間分の食料などの備蓄を求める「緊急要請」を発表する予定です。 [テレ朝NEWS] https://news.tv-asahi.co.jp
