Japan Lower House Seat Cut Debate: Nippon Ishin Moves Toward Compromise Proposal

Nippon Ishin no Kai is reported to be moving toward accepting a compromise proposal from the Liberal Democratic Party to cut 31 seats from the proportional representation segment of the House of Representatives. The ruling bloc has submitted a bill to cut 45 proportional seats, while the LDP's compromise, based on population decline estimates, reduces the number to 31 to win support from some opposition parties. Party leader Yoshimura said a 45-seat, or one-tenth, reduction remains the core position, while stressing the need to consider opposition views. Most members at a party meeting reportedly favored sticking to the one-tenth cut.
