Kindness as comfort or confrontation | Thisakya Goonasekara | TEDxGC Negombo Youth
Why people often seek reassurance rather than honesty, especially after making a mistake, is the central question of this TEDxGC Negombo Youth talk. The speaker draws on her experience as Head Girl, where she has had to speak up, sometimes even to her own friends, and reflects on what confronting someone you care about can cost. She argues that people willing to upset us are often those who care most, and also looks at how AI can become an easy place to hide, since it only hears the version of events we choose to share.
In this video- Why reassurance is often preferred over honest feedback
- Personal experience of speaking up as Head Girl
- Confrontation as a sign of care
- AI as a place to hide from honest feedback
In my talk, I explore why we so often look for reassurance instead of honesty, especially after we’ve made a mistake. As Head Girl, I’ve had to be the person who speaks up, sometimes even with my own friends, and I’ve learned how much it can cost to confront someone you care about. That’s exactly why I believe the people who are willing to upset us are often the ones who care about us the most. I also look at how AI has become an easy place to hide, because it only ever hears the version of the story we choose to tell. Kindness as comfort or confrontation This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
