The "Strong" That Hunts us | Aristotelis Vathis | TEDxDeree ACG
Rigid expectations that boys become emotionally closed "iron boxes" can harm men's mental health and relationships. The talk links stoic masculinity to shame around vulnerability, delayed help-seeking, hidden depression, and a male suicide rate reported as two to four times higher than women's worldwide. It proposes practical, emotionally literate approaches to therapy and to redefining strength as openness and communication.
In this video- Stoic masculinity norms and their effect on men's mental health
- Shame around vulnerability and avoidance of help-seeking
- Calls for emotional literacy for boys and practical approaches to therapy
- Redefining strength as presence and communication
The talk is about the rigid societal expectations to act as an "iron box," forcing boys from a young age to adopt a mold of stoic, unemotional strength that severely harms their mental health and relationships. Because men are conditioned to equate vulnerability with shame, they frequently ignore warning signs, avoid seeking help, and suffer from hidden depression—contributing to a male suicide rate two to four times higher than women globally. This emotional armor not only isolates men from the warmth and communication necessary for long-term relationships, but it also strips away their psychological flexibility. To dismantle this harmful script, the talk calls for reframing therapy around practical functioning, teaching emotional literacy to young boys, and redefining heroism as the courage to be present, communicative, and human rather than permanently silent. Aristotle Vathis, MD, MSc, ECP is a psychiatrist and psychotherapist based in Athens, Greece, with training at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Medical School and a psychiatric residency at the Aiginiteion University Hospital. Holding the European Certificate of Psychotherapy (ECP) and trained in Systemic Psychotherapy, he brings deep clinical expertise in EMDR and trauma therapy — drawing on psychiatry, psychotherapy, and the psychological and social sciences to treat the whole person behind every diagnosis, always through an individualized lens. He challenges the deep-rooted stigmas that keep people from seeking mental health support, championing a more open and barrier-free approach to mental wellbeing. As the founder of www.therapia.gr and a frequent voice in Greek media, he is committed to making mental health knowledge accessible to everyone — especially those who have been taught to suffer in silence.
