Shogi player Nishiyama Tomoka announces she will become the first woman professional

Nishiyama Tomoka, holder of four women's shogi titles, announced at a press conference that she will become a professional shogi player, the first woman to do so. The press conference was held at the Shogi Kaikan in Shibuya, Tokyo, and streamed uncut. Nishiyama is set to become a professional from April 1 of next year. Women have previously needed to win through the Shoreikai training system or pass an entrance exam, and Nishiyama had done neither; under a system introduced last June, winning the women's title Hakuryo five times in total grants professional status, a condition she met on the 10th.
