Finland grants world-first operating licence for nuclear waste final repository
The Finnish government has approved the operation of Onkalo, a final repository for high-level radioactive waste, commonly called nuclear waste, in Eurajoki in southwestern Finland, until the end of 2070. The local nuclear regulator had judged in August of this year that the facility could be operated. The government cited the safety of nearby residents and workers among its reasons. It is the first time a government has granted an operating licence to a facility that buries nuclear waste underground.
