Green pine coast turns brown in Oita: damage spreads rapidly
On the coast of Kunisaki in Oita Prefecture, most of the several hundred pine trees lining the shore have turned brown. Tsubasa Kawai of the Kunisaki City Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Division says the cause is not sea wind but pests that enter through wounds made by longhorn beetles. The number of pine trees felled last year was 3,323, roughly four times the previous year. Because the pine forest serves as a windbreak, its effect on local life is a concern.
