Okonomiyaki food poisoning: what happened to the couple, a plant mistaken for yamaimo

An elderly couple in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, fell ill with food poisoning after eating okonomiyaki. They had found a plant resembling yamaimo (mountain yam) in their garden, chopped it and added it to the dish. The plant was reportedly the root of gloriosa, which can in some cases be fatal if eaten. The husband in his 70s has recovered, while his wife in her 60s remains hospitalized.
