The talk examines how social media keeps people connected to a beauty ideal built around their insecurities, and what that costs in time, energy and attention. Paola Michelini starts with her teenage years in the 1980s, when unreachable TV role models were part of daily life and switching off the TV gave room for oneself. She argues that today's platforms take attention away from other things, including solidarity and commitment to others. Her proposal is to find freedom by learning to look at oneself in a new way.

Always on significa anche always off: dipende da che prospettiva lo guardi. Paola Michelini parte dalla sua adolescenza negli anni Ottanta, tra modelli televisivi irraggiungibili e un rapporto difficile con il proprio corpo. All’epoca bastava spegnere la TV per ritrovare spazio per sé. Oggi i social ci tengono costantemente connessi a un ideale di bellezza costruito su misura sulle nostre insicurezze. Il prezzo è tempo, energia e spazio mentale sottratti a tutto il resto, comprese la solidarietà e l’impegno verso gli altri. La sua proposta è liberarsi imparando a guardarsi in un modo nuovo, perché il mondo ha bisogno della nostra attenzione altrove. Paola Michelini è un’attrice, autrice e regista teatrale italiana, diplomata all’Accademia Nazionale d’Arte Drammatica Silvio D’Amico di Roma e perfezionatasi al Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute di New York. Nel 2017 ha fondato il collettivo teatrale U.G.O. e collabora con il Festival di Internazionale a Ferrara, portando in scena monologhi su temi sociali e politici. Nel 2024 è stata speaker TEDx, affrontando il rapporto tra informazione mainstream e questione palestinese. Nel 2025 ha pubblicato Introversa, un libro che riflette con ironia e schiettezza sulle relazioni, l’identità e le convenzioni sociali.
