Beyond the Shame: A New Perspective on Preventive Healthcare | Dr. Rohit Singh | TEDxMoulsari Avenue
Procrastination, misinformation and social stigma can turn simple, treatable anorectal conditions into more complicated ones, according to this TEDxMoulsari Avenue talk by Dr. Rohit Singh, a Delhi-based general, laser and anorectal surgeon. Drawing on his work as a proctologist, he looks at the risks of relying on online health advice and choosing confidence over medical competence. The talk argues for treating health as an ongoing concern rather than something addressed only when a problem arises. It encourages open discussion of taboo conditions and consultation with qualified doctors. The speaker's views are his own, as noted in the TED disclaimer attached to the video.
In this video- Why delayed care and stigma make treatable conditions harder to manage
- Risks of unverified online health advice and self-diagnosis
- Preventive health as a consistent habit rather than a reaction to crisis
- Encouragement to seek evidence-based care from qualified doctors
NOTE FROM TED: This talk only represents the speaker’s personal views and understanding of mindset, lifestyle, and disease. We've flagged this talk because it falls outside the content guidelines TED gives TEDx organizers. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdf We invest in skincare, fitness, careers, and financial security—but how often do we invest in preventing illness before it becomes a crisis? This talk challenges the way we approach healthcare, particularly when it comes to conditions that society considers uncomfortable or embarrassing to discuss. Drawing from his experience as a proctologist, the speaker highlights how procrastination, misinformation, social stigma, and the growing influence of unverified online health advice can turn simple, treatable conditions into complicated ones. From relying on “Dr. Google” and social media to choosing confidence over competence, the talk examines the dangerous gaps between awareness, information, and evidence-based medical care. The speaker calls for a fundamental shift in perspective: stop treating health as something we address only when something goes wrong. Break the silence around taboo health conditions, seek qualified medical advice, and understand that there is no shortcut to good health—only consistent, informed choices. Dr. Rohit Singh is a general, laser and anorectal surgeon based in Delhi, practising at the Sushruta Anorectal Institute and Research Centre (SARI), Rohini. A gold medalist in General Surgery and a Fellow in Surgical Gastroenterology from IMS, Banaras Hindu University, he has spent his career at the intersection of traditional Ayurvedic surgical wisdom and modern colorectal medicine — most notably through his proprietary Graded Kshar Sutra TherapyTM, a sphincter-preserving, minimally invasive approach to complex anorectal disease. His clinical focus spans haemorrhoids, fistula-in-ano, pilonidal sinus, and anal fissures, with a special interest in patient education, de-stigmatising anorectal illness, and steering patients away from unregulated and misinformed treatment pathways toward evidence-based care.
