Saidaiji Eyo (Naked Festival) cancelled after two deaths

The Saidaiji Eyo, widely known as the Naked Festival, held at Saidaiji Kannon-in temple in Okayama Prefecture, will not take place next year. The organizing committee announced that the Ji-oshi and treasure stick scramble events will be suspended. The decision follows a February event in which three participants lost consciousness and were taken to hospital, and two of them died. The committee said it hopes to hold the 519th festival, in two years, if safety measures are sufficiently in place.

■2人死亡“はだか祭り”中止へ 岡山県の西大寺観音院で行われる「西大寺会陽」。奇祭、“はだか祭り”として知られています。福を呼ぶとされる木の棒「宝木」を約1万人の裸の男たちが奪い合います。室町時代から500年以上続いていて、国の重要無形民俗文化財に指定されている伝統行事です。 ところが…。 西大寺会陽奉賛会　大森實会長 「来年の西大寺会陽につきましては『地押し』『宝木争奪戦』は中止します」 次回の“はだか祭り”を中止すると発表しました。 今年2月に行われた「宝木争奪戦」で参加者3人が意識不明となり、搬送。そのうち2人が亡くなりました。 西大寺会陽奉賛会　大森實会長 「2人が亡くなる事態になり重く受け止めています。安全第一の執行は非常に難しい。残念だがそのように皆で判断した。再発防止安全対策が十分に行き届くようになれば、519回（再来年）にはお越しいただけるよう努力したい」
