Six killed on Shin-Meishin Expressway: former truck driver sentenced to 7 years in prison

A court in Tsu has sentenced former truck driver Mizutani Mizutsuyo, 55, to seven years in prison over a crash in March on the Shin-Meishin Expressway in Kameyama, Mie Prefecture, which killed six people. According to the indictment, she was allegedly looking at a smartphone screen while driving a truck at about 82 km/h when the accident occurred. Prosecutors had cited a habit of using a phone while driving and the severity of the outcome in seeking the maximum term for negligent driving causing death. A press conference by bereaved families is scheduled after the ruling.

3月、三重県亀山市の新名神高速で6人が死亡した事故の裁判で、事故を起こしたとされる女に判決が言い渡されました。 　起訴状などによりますと、元トラック運転手の水谷水都代被告（55）は3月、亀山市の新名神高速でスマートフォンの画面を見ながら時速およそ82キロでトラックを運転し、事故を起こして6人を死亡させたとして過失運転致死の罪に問われています。 　検察側はこれまでの裁判で「ながらスマホの常習性が認められ、被害結果もあまりに甚大」などとして、過失運転致死罪の法定刑の上限にあたる拘禁刑7年を求刑しています。 　20日に開かれた裁判で、津地裁は水谷被告に対し、拘禁刑7年の判決を言い渡しました。 　判決を受け、午後からは被害者遺族らによる会見が開かれる予定です。 [テレ朝NEWS] https://news.tv-asahi.co.jp
