Japanese Calligraphy (Shodō) Set to Be Inscribed on UNESCO Intangible Heritage List
UNESCO's evaluation body has recommended that shodō, Japanese calligraphy, be inscribed on the Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Japan had applied for the listing, which was deferred after its first application and resubmitted last year. The final decision is expected at the intergovernmental committee meeting in Xiamen, China, in early December. Japan says calligraphy is used in many everyday situations and has become a social custom.
