Sub-Capital Development Promotion Headquarters Launched (October 30, 2026)

The Japanese government has launched the Sub-Capital Development Promotion Headquarters, chaired by Prime Minister Takaichi, alongside the enforcement of a law on developing a sub-capital that could take over Tokyo's core functions during major disasters. Minister in charge Fujii Hiyonoyuki stressed backup for central capital functions in large-scale disasters and easing Tokyo's concentration, with a multipolar, decentralized economic zone. The headquarters will hear from experts and local governments and compile a basic policy within one year. It also plans to present basic concepts and a schedule for designation around November.
