Former University of Tokyo professor sentenced to 2 years, suspended for 3 years, in hospitality bribery case

A former University of Tokyo professor, Shinichi Sato, has been found guilty in a bribery case linked to the university. The Tokyo District Court sentenced him to two years in prison, suspended for three years, and ordered him to pay about 1.83 million yen in additional collected funds. Sato was charged with accepting hospitality worth about 1.8 million yen from a former representative director of the Japan Cosmetic Industry Association in return for joint research. At his first hearing he admitted the charges.
