UK approves new North Sea gas field development amid fuel crisis

The UK government approved the development of the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea off Scotland on the 21st. The move is expected to raise domestic gas output by up to 6%, with supply to the market possibly starting as early as the end of this month. Amid rising fuel prices caused by the deteriorating situation in the Middle East, the government says domestic gas will strengthen energy security. The project had been suspended after a legal challenge from environmental groups, and its environmental impact was being reassessed.
