Kim Kelley, who was born and raised in an international cult, examines why acting before fully understanding a complex problem can lead to ineffective intervention. Drawing on her experience of surviving two decades of systemic abuse and her current work with law enforcement, survivors, technology companies and community leaders, she argues that understanding the system, the people within it and the consequences of each choice can shape better next steps. The talk was given at TEDxButterfish Cove, an independently organized TEDx event.

Description from TEDx Talks

What if the biggest obstacle to solving complex problems isn’t a lack of action, but acting before we truly understand them? Drawing from her experience growing up inside an abusive system and now working alongside professionals confronting complex real-world problems, Kim Kelley explores how assumptions shape intervention—and why understanding the system, the people inside it, and the consequences of our choices can change what we do next. Kim Kelley was born and raised in one of the world’s most infamous international cults. After surviving 20 years of systemic abuse, including child trafficking, Kim escaped and transformed her lived experience into a mission of prevention, education, and systemic change. Today, she is an executive at a Tier-1 training facility where she collaborates with law enforcement, survivors, technology companies, and community leaders to develop survivor-informed solutions that bridge the gap between awareness and action — proving our greatest challenges can become catalysts for meaningful impact. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
