Why the U.S. is Livestreaming Its First Firing Squad in 60 Years | N18S

This News18 Shorts video, presented by CNN-News18, discusses the U.S. military's plan to livestream a firing squad execution, the first in about 60 years. It says Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recommended a firing squad for Nidal Hasan, the Fort Hood shooter, and that the Pentagon confirmed a December 3rd execution would be broadcast publicly. The video argues that democracies have traditionally kept executions out of sight, and that broadcasting one could resemble the theatrical practices of autocracies and give the perpetrator the global audience he sought. Analysis is presented by Griha Atul.

For two centuries, modern democracies made a quiet promise: state-sanctioned execution happens out of sight. Privacy was how a state signaled its restraint and adherence to the rule of law. Now, the U.S. military is preparing to break that precedent. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recommended a firing squad for Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan, and the Pentagon has confirmed the December 3rd execution will be livestreamed to the public. Why does this matter? When autocracies broadcast death, it serves as theater and power. When a functioning democracy does it, it marks a profound shift in the very nature of justice. By livestreaming the ultimate punishment, the U.S. risks echoing the theatrical tactics it has long condemned—while handing a radicalized mass shooter the exact global audience he always wanted.
