Centenary of the former Yokosuka Naval District headquarters building
A ceremony marking 100 years since completion of the former Imperial Japanese Navy Yokosuka Naval District headquarters building was held at the US Fleet Activities Yokosuka base in Japan. The naval district was set up to protect the port, and the anniversary was attended by Rear Admiral Ian Johnson, commander of US Naval Forces Japan, and people connected to the building's design and construction. The current building was erected in 1926 after the earlier brick headquarters collapsed in the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake. According to Yokosuka city, it is considered the first earthquake-resistant building in Japan.
