The speaker first contemplated the concept of meritocracy after reading Sandel's "The Tyranny of Merit." In her speech, she opens with a contrast. Her friend, whose parents worked two jobs and who studied by phone light, gained admission to a provincial key high school, whereas her cousin, who attended an international school with abundant family resources, failed to get into an ideal university due to anxiety. She then poses the question to the audience: Who had the better shot? She cites the statistic that students from affluent families are 77 times more likely to be admitted to an elite university than their less privileged peers. She concedes that her own achievements were simultaneously the product of nurturing and support from countless others alongside her own diligence. She asks, "How much of me is actually because of me?" ultimately reflecting on whether those universally acknowledged as accomplished truly earn what they have entirely by themselves. She believed that true excellence should enable one to turn around and recognize that success was not achieved through isolation. My name is Megan, and I am a storyteller, a strategist, and a student with a global perspective. I am currently in SSBS but in September I would be joining my new school, CLC in UK. I’ve started to learn debate at a very young age. Over the past few years, I have achieved 3rd Place Globally in the BPA Business Pitch Competition, 2nd Place at the NHSDLC British Parliamentary Debate Asian Open, National Champion at the TOC Asia Summer Invitation Debating Tournament, and Runner-Up at BIT. In business and economics, I earned a Silver Award at the SKT-BPA Full-Scale Business Simulation and became National Runner-Up at the Asdan WYEF Global Youth Economic Forum. Beyond competition, I expanded my horizons at the Purdue University GER Genius Camp, exploring aerospace studies and creative thinking. In this organization, I am not only a participant but also one of the crew members. I thank TEDx and my teammates for working together and making everything come true. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
