We are breaking down the intense birth plot on Season 2 finale of HBO’s The Pitt, and whew… my blood pressure is elevated just thinking about it. In this episode, a patient who chose a "wild pregnancy" (completely unassisted pregnancy with zero prenatal care) arrives at the ER in severe distress. Things quickly escalate from severe preeclampsia to an eclamptic seizure, leading to an absolute worst-case scenario: an emergency crash C-section right there in the emergency room. As an OBGYN, this is the definition of a nightmare situation. As a viewer of TV who's also an OBGYN, this kind of plot is infuriating because where is the L&D team?? Literally any OBGYN in the entire state of Pennsylvania would be rushing to the ER immediately! And the ER team would be sending them up to L&D immediately even if a literal zombie apocalypse was taking place up there. Slight exaggeration, but you know what I mean. Today, we’re looking at the medical accuracy of The Pitt: 🤔 What exactly is a "wild pregnancy," and why is it so incredibly dangerous? 👩🏼⚕️ How does preeclampsia progress to eclampsia (seizures)? 🤰🏽 Could an emergency C-section actually happen in an ER, or is this just Hollywood drama? Let's dive in and separate the medical facts from the TV fiction.
