What if the biggest obstacle to success isn't failure, but the stories our own minds tell us? Drawing from her personal experiences, Ellie Ma explores how the spotlight effect, self-imposed pressure, and perfectionism can hold us back more than any actual challenge. Her talk challenges us to question the fear of being judged, let go of impossible expectations, and realize that sometimes, the only thing standing in our way is our own mind. Ellie Ma is a 12-year-old award-winning writer who is fascinated by how people think, feel, and connect. Whether she’s writing stories or playing tennis, she loves exploring what motivates people and how to overcome mental challenges. In her TEDxYouth talk, The Biggest Lie Our Brain Tells Us, Ellie explores the spotlight effect—our tendency to believe others are paying far more attention to us than they really are. Through personal stories and psychology, she shows how recognizing this mental illusion can help us worry less about others’ opinions, take more meaningful risks, and live more authentically. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
