India’s satellite internet debate is intensifying as Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia says the country will not allow a monopoly in any sector. The statement comes amid questions over Starlink’s entry into India and the regulatory process governing satellite communication services. The government says three companies have received licences for satellite communication services: Starlink, Bharti-backed Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications. However, a licence does not mean commercial services can begin immediately. All three operators must meet the prescribed security conditions, and their security assessments are underway. Once the process is completed for a company, it can move to the next step of seeking spectrum assignment. The government has described India’s satellite communication authorisation framework as fair and non-discriminatory, saying all three companies are at broadly the same regulatory stage. The debate has gained attention after Starlink owner Elon Musk questioned the delays surrounding the company’s Indian launch. On this LIVE broadcast, we examine Scindia’s “no monopoly” statement, Starlink’s India plans, the status of the three licensed operators, and the security clearances required before commercial services can begin. What could this mean for competition, connectivity and the future of satellite broadband in India?
