As officers breached the doorway, Michael Baker reportedly opened the interior door and pointed a revolver at officers, prompting one officer to fire multiple rounds. Baker retreated inside the home but collapsed in the living room and was pronounced dead at the scene despite lifesaving efforts. Investigators determined that four shots were fired, striking Baker and fatally wounding him near the front entrance of the residence. A second individual inside the home, identified as Mary Lou Dunn, was struck in the leg by bullet fragments but suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Dunn later told investigators she had been in the kitchen preparing food and did not recall hearing police announce themselves before the entry, describing only a loud bang before the shooting began.
