The US Pentagon has announced plans to livestream the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, the former US Army psychiatrist convicted in the 2009 Fort Hood shooting that killed 13 people and injured 32 others. The execution by firing squad is scheduled for December 3, 2026, at Fort Hood, Texas. The announcement has sparked a major debate over capital punishment, public executions and the ethics of broadcasting a state-sanctioned killing. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has defended making the execution public, arguing that people should understand the consequences of such crimes. President Donald Trump approved the death sentence, while the Army has announced the execution date. However, Vice President JD Vance has expressed doubts about whether the livestream will ultimately take place. The plan has drawn criticism from lawmakers across party lines, religious leaders and human rights advocates. Legal experts are also examining whether the proposed broadcast could face legal challenges and what it could mean for the future of military executions in the United States. In this CNN-News18 LIVE coverage, we examine the Pentagon's announcement, the history of the Fort Hood shooting, Nidal Hasan's military trial and death sentence, the controversy surrounding firing-squad executions, and the legal and ethical questions raised by a public livestream.
