Hurricane Simon, the tropical storm warned of by Mexican authorities over the weekend, is closing in on the country’s western coasts, bringing devastating effects to the state of Colima. Footage captured intense wind speeds of more than 240 kilometres per hour, heavy rainfall – with a projected 30 inches to come – and the flooding of residencies and streets in the Pacific Ocean port city of Manzanillo. One resident said the storm started to take it’s toll “at dawn, around 3 a.m.,” noting the water had never risen to such a high level in Manzanillo. Another local echoed that, admitting she struggled not watch the storm come in, as it marks “the first time [we’ve seen] a hurricane.” An extreme weather warning advisory is in place and authorities in high-risk areas have taken precautionary measures, ordering immediate evacuations.
