A mysterious death at Russia’s Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute has sparked international concern over laboratory safety, disease surveillance and transparency. Darya Shipilova, a 28-year-old laboratory technician, died on October 2 after developing severe pneumonia. Early reports suggested a possible laboratory accident involving Yersinia pestis, the bacterium responsible for plague, but that account remains unconfirmed. Russian authorities say investigators found no evidence of an accident involving dangerous pathogens and have attributed her death to pneumonia of unknown cause.
