The human brain evolved to manage a social world of approximately 150 people. The global population has quadrupled in one century. That mismatch—between our cognitive architecture and the scale of the modern world—is the unnamed structural condition underneath loneliness, polarization, and our strange relationships with people we've never met. Mark calls this our “cognitive village” and his talk will explore how understanding this concept changes how we see ourselves and each other. Mark earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Media Studies from Austin College in 1984, and went on to earn a J.D. from The University of Texas at Austin in 1988. Mark has over 25 years of experience as a judge and senior executive, having served most recently as the Assistant Chief Immigration Judge in Los Angeles. In 2025, Mark founded the executive consulting company Inner Loop Performance Coaching, where he integrates conscious leadership, decision-environment awareness, and the idea of the “cognitive village” to help leaders effectively navigate complexity. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
