* (Disclaimer: The content in this video is intended for educational and informational purposes only) Fremont, California — On July 24, 2026, at approximately 3:40 p.m., Fremont Police Officers were dispatched to an assisted living center in the 3800 block of Walnut Avenue following multiple 911 callers reporting a man with a gun. The caller described the man holding the weapon, 62-year-old Edward Oliver, and said he was holding elderly residents hostage in a dining room at the facility. Officers arrived and immediately entered the facility. When Officer Holback reached the lobby, staff members pointed toward Oliver, and a woman said, "He has a gun and he has my Mom and my Sister." Oliver was in a room with two women, one of them visibly crouching under a table as officer Holback approached the door. The officer looked through the door window and observed Oliver holding what appeared to be a firearm. Officers gave Oliver multiple commands to put down the gun. Oliver responded, "No," and pointed the gun toward one of the victims. Unknown to the victims, bystanders, and officers, Oliver was holding an airsoft gun designed to resemble a firearm. After Oliver pointed the replica firearm at the victim on the floor, officer Holback continued giving him commands to put it down. Oliver did not comply. Officer Holback discharged his service weapon, followed by officer Higgins. Officers immediately entered the room to secure the hostages. Oliver, who was on the floor, was still holding the replica firearm and began to raise it as the officers approached. Officers Holback, Higgins, Hensley, and Barakat discharged their service weapons. Officer Higgins' body-worn camera shows the rescue of the victim who was hiding under the table while Oliver pointed the replica firearm at her. Officers Hensley and Barakat discharged their service weapons after the initial volley of fire. Officers immediately provided medical aid to Oliver. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The two elderly residents were safely rescued. Neither suffered physical injuries. Officer Holback sustained minor injuries during the rescue.
