Elon Musk’s Starlink entry into India has sparked a major debate over market access, national security and competition in the satellite internet sector. Musk has accused unnamed “oligarchs” of obstructing Starlink’s entry and questioned Mukesh Ambani’s influence in India’s telecom market. The government, however, has rejected allegations of discrimination, maintaining that India’s satellite communication regulations are fair, transparent and non-discriminatory. Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has also responded to the controversy, defending India’s regulatory framework and stressing that no company can be allowed to operate outside the rules. Starlink, Reliance Jio Satellite Communications and Bharti Airtel-backed Eutelsat OneWeb are navigating the approval process, with security clearances and spectrum assignment among the key requirements.
