Big Tech Wants to be Big Neuro. How Can Public Policy Respond? | Jake Auchincloss | TEDxBerkshires
Brain-computer interfaces, devices that read brain activity to issue digital commands or induce brain activity by bypassing the usual sensory pathways, could move from medical settings to consumer products. Congressman Jake Auchincloss argues that large technology companies may market such devices, for example implants paired with apps for sleep, focus or anxiety management. The talk raises three public policy questions for protecting general welfare and preventing corporate exploitation if these interfaces reach consumers.

Congressman Jake Auchincloss predicts that Big Tech will try to become Big Neuro by marketing brain-computer interfaces: electronic devices that directly translate brain activity into digital commands, or that induce brain activity by bypassing the usual sensory pathways. For example, imagine a microchip implant + injection that then allows you to use an app to put yourself to sleep, get into flow at work, or manage anxiety and depression. In this TEDx talk, Congressman Auchincloss raises three public policy questions that must be addressed to promote general welfare and prevent corporate exploitation if brain-computer interfaces scale to consumers. Congressman Jake Auchincloss is serving his third term representing the Massachusetts Fourth. In addition to his work on the House Committee on Energy & Commerce, his areas of focus include healthcare, clean energy, gun violence, and building a strong middle class. Jake was born and raised in Newton, Massachusetts, the son of a surgeon and a scientist. They showed him the value of curiosity and hard work. From the moment he could read, Jake loved American history. After graduating from Harvard College, Jake joined the Marines. He commanded infantry in Afghanistan and special operations in Panama. Upon returning home, Jake continued his service as a three-term city councilor in Newton. While working at City Hall on nights and weekends, Jake built a career in business, running product development at both a Fortune 100 insurance company and a cybersecurity startup. He has degrees in Economics and Finance from Harvard University and MIT Sloan. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
