Bear Released in Mountains Returns Near Town; Hiking Trail in Autumn Foliage Spot Closed Again in Hadano, Kanagawa
A bear sighting series in a park in Hadano, Kanagawa Prefecture, led the city to close a hiking trail that is popular for autumn foliage. A male Asiatic black bear that had been captured and released deep in the mountains was filmed again near a nearby pass three days later, and officials confirmed it was the same animal through a tracking device. Prefectural officials said public safety is the top priority while the species is protected as endangered in its Red Data Book listing. The governor said the response is still being coordinated with the city.
