Fake Dragonfly Targets Hornets: Low-Cost Trial in Hokkaido
In Hokkaido, a simple device modeled on the giant dragonfly, a natural predator of hornets, is drawing attention as a hornet countermeasure during the autumn season when hornet activity increases. It is made by cutting tiger-striped rope into 10-centimeter pieces and attaching a clip to one end. According to the Hokkaido Development Bureau's Muroran office, no hornet nests were found at 41 river sites where the devices were installed this year. Officials said cooler average temperatures may have contributed, and they plan to continue testing next year.
