iPS cell transplant surgery succeeds, first under health insurance coverage worldwide
A hospital in Osaka performed a transplant of "Reheart", a sheet of heart muscle cells made from iPS cells, on a female patient with severe heart failure. The report says this is the first use of the treatment worldwide since it became covered by health insurance. Three sheets were attached to the heart in a surgery that took about an hour, and the patient's recovery is described as good. The patient said that about a week after surgery she could breathe deeply.
