Debate Begins on Japan's Consumption Tax Cut Bill; New Benefit Figures Not Yet Set
Deliberations have begun in the House of Representatives Finance and Monetary Affairs Committee on a bill that would cut the consumption tax on food to 1% from April next year. Komeito Deputy Leader Akaba questioned the government's failure to specify the amount and eligible recipients of a planned benefit for low- and middle-income households. Finance Minister Katayama said the concrete figures have not yet been decided and pointed to a past high school tuition support system as a precedent. The ruling parties aim to pass the bill through the lower house in early next month.
