LDP proposes compromise on cutting lower house seats: 45 reduced to 31
Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party has proposed a compromise on reducing the number of seats in the House of Representatives. The party's earlier bill called for cutting 45 proportional seats, and the new proposal lowers that figure to 31. The party also plans to switch the proportional seat allocation method from the D'Hondt system to a modified Sainte-Laguë system, which gives smaller parties a better chance of winning seats. Ruling and opposition parties aim to reach agreement next week with the support of some opposition groups, including the Democratic Party for the People, though the Japan Innovation Party insists on the 10 percent cut agreed in the coalition deal.
